Can I legally park in my own driveway?
Here's an interesting question one of my clients recently posed to me... Can I legally park in my own driveway if I buy this house? I'm not sure...
This fire hydrant is about 15 feet from the street. It is in Clear Lake... a suburb in Houston, TX. I asked the opinion of a League City Fireman who replied with some hesitation. One said that they would probably be able to access the hydrant with a car parked next to it... provided it wasn't within a foot or 2...
Another fireman I asked replied that he's not sure, but would love the opportunity to get to break out someones windows to run a hose through to the hydrant!!! Pretty funny answer. He basically shook his head at the terrible planning for the placement of this hydrant!

An interesting question to ponder...
I agree, poor planning by Developer / Fire Department. It would be difficult to fine someone for parking in their own driveway. I am sorry for the owner that has the fire hydrant so close to the driveway.
Thank you for sharing
I can't believe they put that there! You either think or you don't think! Have a great day!
in my development it is not uncommon for the hydrants to actually be IN the driveway. When the lots were originally laid out the hydrants were all in grassy areas but many people have widened their driveways and now the hydrants are actually 'in' the driveways. I've actually wondered the same thing about whether it would still be legal to park within 'x' number of feet of the hydrant.
If you should get any further clarity about this I'd appreciate seeing an update!
Hi Brian,
That's a great question. It looks like you could get in trouble for that.

Yes. As long as the fire truck can access the hydrant from the street and the homeowner isn't parked in the Cioty right-of-way, there shouldn't be a problem.
Just be careful when teaching your 15 year old to back out the driveway!!! LOL!!
